Frequently Asked Questions

A Typical Day

How many Councilors serve on the Boston City Council?
There are thirteen councilors, nine district councilors serving specific neighborhoods and four at large councilors serving the entire city.

What is the primary function of the Boston City Council?
As the legislative body of the city, the City Council serves as the link between the citizens of Boston and their municipal government. The City Council reviews and approves the city budget. In addition to the primary function of the city budget councilors also provide constituent services and write legislation.

How long is a city councilor’s term in office?
City councilors serve a term of two years.

As the District 5 Councilor you have done some wonderful things for your district that have also benefited the entire city. What do you see as the important issues facing our neighborhoods and our city in the future?
Educational opportunities for all children in Boston, affordable housing, and safe, clean neighborhoods are challenges that will require constant attention and ensuring that resources in the city budget are directed to these areas is always on the forefront.  In addition, environmental issues and conservation are areas whose time has come and as a city we must continue to find better ways to use our resources. I envision the use of new technologies as one way to help us as we move forward.  From education, public safety and the environment emerging technologies can help us to work smarter and more efficiently.

Are you supportive of a K-8 model for Boston schools?
I have worked with parents and educators to bring the first K-8 model to the Roosevelt School in Hyde Park. That model is currently being explored at the Ohrenberger and the Phineas Bates in Roslindale. I will continue to work with parents to make available the best educational opportunities for all of the children of Boston.
